Livingstone Eland Taurotragus oryx livingstonianus Livingstone Eland
Cape Eland Taurotragus oryx oryx Kaapse Eland
South Africa is the home of two subspecies of eland, i.e. the Cape eland - characterized by being uniform grey from the southern and western parts of the country. The other subspecies is the Livingston eland - characterized by a number of vertical white lines on the body - from the north eastern areas of the country. Unfortunately these two subspecies interbreed and pure specimens of either is quite rare today. Standing some 6 feet at the shoulder and weighing
up to 2,000 pounds, Eland bulls are Eland are generally not aggressive, but a downed animal must be approached with caution. Be prepared for a fair bit of walking when going for eland, especially when they start their characteristic trot, which can continue throughout the day. Nevertheless, it's well worth the walk as a good specimen remains an impressive shoulder mount in any company. Recommended Calibers: Eland have fallen to .270 Winchester class calibers, but a .300 Win. Mag. is preferable, with a .375 H&H Magnum even better still. Trophy Qualification Minimums: Rowland Ward - 35 S.C.I. - 77
